Problem with Defender Updates

I've had several of the systems I manage have their Defender stop downloading
the update files. Even manually clicking the update now button fails. I
have downloaded the latest definitions from the Security site but I would
like to find out what I can do to restore the automatic download feature.

Hello Mike,

Could be a proxy or (ISA) firewall problem, Mike, or could be temporary
problems on MS's end.

Any other errors in WindowsUpdate.log (e.g., 0x8024000C; 801901f4)?

Are you updating via WSUS?

Check the WindowsUpdate.log for FATAL errors:

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093>

The most recent errors are located at the *bottom* of the WU.log.

Thank you for your response. I think you may have given me a clue to the
answer. We recently deployed Microsoft's System Center Essentials on our
property which incorporates WSUS. I did not connect the two events but the
Defender updates stopped about that time.

I don’t remember seeing the Defender updates listed on my updates approval
list in MSSCE, so I am not certain that it is the reason the updates stopped.
Do you know anything about SCE? Like where I would look to see if it is the
cause for Defender not updating?

You are on the right track. I think you need to ask this in a WSUS support
forum--but Windows Defender definitions should indeed be able to be approved
for distribution, but I don’t know what they'd be called myself, I'm afraid.
I'd go back there and poke around--I'm certain that's the root cause--you
need to approve them for distribution to the clients.
