other recurring problems that I will be reporting but my basic questions is

John,

I'm having the identical problem!! Installed the Def Update six times with
the same results. I then uninstalled Windows Defender and downloaded and
installed it again thinking there was a corrupt file. However, the same
thing has happened so for the time being, I just uninstalled Win Defender
until there's a fix.

So that John doesn't feel alone and MS knows this is not a one person
problem. I have experienced the exact update issue described by John.

Bill,

After jumping through frustrating, useless hoops for most of the day, I used
your recommended fix and it worked like a charm! Should this glitch reoccur,
will let everyone know. Many thanks!

you tried click Start, click Run,
type Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}, and then click OK?

Worked perferct using Run command in previous post from W. Thornton... then u
just use the update command on the main Win Defender screen. Only took 2
minutes to do all of this, then I got the 'green light!!' thanks y'all

Have you tried updating via Windows Update?

The Windows Installer Cleanup tool--using it to remove "Windows Defender
Signatures"--is another alternative way to handle stuck or cycling updates.

I've read all the posts here and at other places. I've been thru it all
myself and I have found the solution. I works and there are no problems
later. All you have to do is uninstall Windows Defender and get a better anti
spyware. Beta version or not, lets be honest and admit its a piece of junk.
With new spyare coming out daily, what's the use of a program that can't be
updated?

Go to Ad Aware free version or any of the other established programs that
are easily available.
