Defender will not uninstall

Since installing Defender my computer has been slow and at times locking up
so I tried to uninstall. When I do I get the following message. "the
installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This
may indicate a problem with this package. the error code is 2203.." then a
second message reads: " Fatal error during installation".
I've tried uninstalling from the control panel and the MicroSoft website and
always get the same error messages. I've tried re-installing with the same
result. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Only a "me too" I'm afraid. I'm trying to install the Vista Beta 2, but it
won't let me do so until I uninstall Windows Defender. And, when I try to do
so, I get the "Fatal Error during Installation" message.

Just an added note. All other uninstalls work OK. I uninstalled Adware
becuase I thought there might be a conflict.

You might try the brute force method. First download Ccleaner (free). When
you install Ccleaner, uncheck the Yahoo toolbar option. Under Administrative
Tools, click Services and Stop Windows Defender Service and then disable WD
Service. Next delete the Windows Defender folder under Program Files. Now
start Ccleaner and under Tools delete the installer entry for Windows
Defender. Now under Issues - scan for issues and delete entries and keep
rescanning until no issues are found. Next do a Search for Windows Defender
and you should find an entry under Application Data. Delete the folder.
Search in this Newsgroup for a post with MSIexec..... which resets the
definition files for Windows Defender. Reboot and hopefully Windows Defender
should be gone. Good luck.

Warning - If you have anything in quarantine under WD, then the procedure I
outlined will erase any items in quarantine.

I'll give that a try. Thanks for the help. Rick

After you do this, look at Services to make sure the Windows Defender entry
is gone. If you do not plan on using Windows Defender again, then also Run
Regedit and do finds for Windows Defenders ; delete appropriate keys. Let me
know if you encounter any problems. Thanks.
