Defender setup error - cannot be validated.

Hello, I am getting the following error on a system that I am working on:
"Setup cannot install this software because the copy of Windows you are
running?cannot be validated. To get?help?with this problem, go?to the Windows
Genuine Advantage website."

so:
- I am running a valid, activate, OEM version of windows
- The Genuine Check gives me "WPMRBN4"
- The Genuine advantage site had no help
- I have extensivly searched Windows knowledge base
- I have extensivly searched the newsgroups
- I also can reinstall AntiSpyware due to numerous errors - regedit
uninstall didn't help

Please help with relevant responses.

Hi Raph,

I ran into the same problem yesterday.

How I solved it was to use Internet Explorer and have ActiveX turned on.

Just for grins-and-giggles, I then tried the same process on my
wife's laptop in FireFox with the IE extension and ActiveX turned on
and it worked fine.

I don't know what the validation process is doing, but it requires
ActiveX.

As to Windows Defender, I have already uninstalled it. It requires
that 'Automatic Updates' service be turned on to work. I learned the
hard way that automatic updates can be dangerous especially if you
are using a number of different machines with different configurations.
