Defender don't remember allowed applications

I answer "allow" on all startup applications I know, and it says
"completed". But at next boot the Defender icon appears, and it asks
if I should allow those startup applications again. Why doesn't it
remember (and how do I add applicationons to the "Allowed items"?)

Windows Defender doesn't provide an "Always Allow" option for real time
protection. However, you can circumvent the issue by customizing real time
protection options (Tools->Options). Alternatively, under Advanced options,
you can specify folders for the startup applications so that you will not be
prompted.

You do not explicity specify "Allowed items". After you do a scan and
Windows Defender finds suspected malware, you have the option to specify
"Always Allow". If you do so, then the items will appear under "Allowed
items" and will not appear in subsequent scans until you "remove" the items
from "Allowed items".

So you are saying that non-known programs will always pop up?
Then Windows Defender (as of to day) is only an annoyance :-(
I use lots of programs that are non MS certified yet :-(

OK, but the startup programs does not show as malware during a scan,
so that is not the way. I think it is very strange that when it tells
you about new startup programs and ask for your choice - it still does
not remember that. Should be a "Remember this program" choice there.

Why isn't there "Add" and "Remove" buttons for the allowed list under
"Tools -> Allowed Items"? That would be so much more intuitive...

No, I am not saying that non-known programs will always pop up. Programs
that make changes (as determined by the real time agents) may pop up (the
actual pop up is controlled by the real time protection options). The
exclusion capability under Advanced options works for both scans and real
time protection. I can only provide a description of how Windows Defender
behaves. I have no control, other than my own personal suggestions in this
newsgroup, over design or functionality issues.

I also have the same problem. I have a Sony VAIO which has a TV tuner built
in which I use the Timer Recorder for recording programs at pre-programmed
times, like a VCR. Unfortunately, every day when Defender does it's scan, it
always asked me to allow or block again. I have always allowed this and it
has never shown up in allowed items. Also the only options are, "Allow" or
"Block", there is no "Always Allow" option as someone previously stated. I
have never gotten anything to show up in "Allowed Items", but have allowed
four items daily or more frequent as these same four which I want to allow
keep coming back. HOW DO YOU GET ANYTHING TO SHOW UP IN "ALLOWED ITEMS"?????

Also, this makes a very long history, which I periodically have to clear
because it take so long for it to come up.

I too have this problem. From McAfee to start up programs with Microsoft
signatures. I'm thinking of disabling Defender between scans just to get some
peace.
It REALLY needs an always allow (for simple use)

I finally figured out by uninstalling defender then rebooting and
reinstalling defender then it worked ok. Problem I have with this though any
software you install after defender is installed, if it's not on windows list
(some software they don't know) then you allways have to keep allowing the
ones you want which isn't too good. The other problem is that allowing
everthing that is already on your computer once you install defender, if you
have a bug in your computer prior to installing defender, then it allows it
which is masking a potential danger. They should make an always allow that
later on you could reverse and an complete unconditional scan option to do
after first installing so you don't mask any problems.
