Win Defender-Can't Change settings for Allowed List -No "Always Al

How do you log on as administrator? Can't follow directions below to solve
this problem.
-------
Add or remove items from the Windows Defender allowed listTo complete these
steps, you must be logged on as an administrator or be a member of the
Administrators group.

If you trust software that Windows Defender has detected, you can stop
Windows Defender from alerting you to risks that the software might pose to
your privacy or your computer. To stop being alerted, you need to add the
software to the Windows Defender allowed list. If you decide that you want to
monitor the software again later, you can remove it from the Windows Defender
allowed list at any time.

To add an item to the allowed list
The next time Windows Defender alerts you about the software, on the Action
menu in the Alert dialog box, click Always Allow.
To remove an item from the allowed list
Open Windows Defender by clicking Start, clicking Programs, and then
clicking Windows Defender.
Click Tools, and then click Allowed items.
Select the item that you want to monitor again, and then click Remove From
List.

What version of Windows?

Is this a machine in a managed network--perhaps a corporate or institutional
setting?

Are you the only user of the machine?

I am having a related problem, my Defender does not have "always allow" as a
choice, just permit and deny. What is wrong and how do I fix it? I'm sick and
tired of always having to go over the same items every time I sign on.

Right back to you Thomas! The list of running product is growing and so is my
patience with running Defender. Will have to remove it if I can't figure out
how to access the "lways allow"choice. Permit and Deny are the only choices
I have ever seen. I also cut on the options of letting anyone using the
machine to adjust defender. Thought I had figured out how to get
administrator rights but thiis made no difference.

The "Always Allow" option only comes into play in the event a WD scan makes
a detection, not from detections made while running real-time protection.
If you want to exclude a real-time detection, add it to the list of "do
not scan these files or locations", which applies not only to scans but to
real-time detections as well.

As Dave says.

I think you are misreading (and understandably) the instructions you posted.
The ability to use that list is predicated on the software appearing on it.
It won't appear on it unless Microsoft marks it for removal by Windows
Defender.

Only Microsoft can make that decision. So--If Microsoft has marked you
favorite keylogger for teenage children, or "administrative remote
access/spyware" program for removal, you can choose to allow it. (and if
the teenage children are limited users, you can choose not to allow them to
reverse that decision.)

Windows Defender removes spyware as defined by an industry standard--not as
defined by you the user. There are other third-party vendors who do provide
that capability, as I understand it--but Microsoft does not.

What every responder is saying misses the point that I am trying to get items
that are in startup and found as questionable by WD in "Allways Allow" for
some reason I can't access this function. Mike/Dave said "If you want to
exclude a real-time detection, add it to the list of "do not scan these
files or locations", which applies not only to scans but to real-time
detections as well." How do I do this? I can't find a way to manually add
programs to the what is referred to as the do not scan list above. I do not
know how to log on as administrator. Is this an initial log on function? I
appreciate everyones help and feel like I am missing something in all the
help offered. The original procedure listed in my problem seems straight
forward, but does not work for me. Should I remove WD and reload program?
Maybe I am working with a crippled installation.

This Microsoft document gives information about the differences in
Administrator Authority as opposed to Limited Authority user accounts on
the XP Operating System :
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/tips/advanced/adminaccount.mspx

If your looking at Windows Defender > Tools > Options, did you notice that
this window is scrollable... i.e.. it continues below the bottom of the
page with a scroll bar to the right side. The referenced "do not scan
list" is toward the bottom of this scrollable page. I believe you're just
not seeing the scroll bar as it's somewhat unusual in XP. Before you go to
uninstall/reinstall see if you can follow the above, if not then a repair
may be appropriate.
