Edit Allowed List

Defender is blocking a Launch utuility when I plug in my thumb drive. How can
I tell it to allow it. Under Tools the lists of allowed or quarantine items
is blank. I see it running under Software Explorer but you can't right click
to allow or anything like that. And in the Options, under programs to not
scan, I can't add it as there is no program on my computer since it loads
from the thumb drive.

I need my files and Defender won't let me at them.

Martin,

What is the name of the utility and how does it run from the flash drive?

All you are doing is listing a bunch of problems you are having getting
around your original problem. It really might help to understand your
original problem. So how about giving us a better description of what
happens when you plug in your flash drive - any windows messages, WD
messages, your actions, why does it fail and also what information is
recorded in WD History.

I have a 1.) GB Scandisk Cruzer thumb drive. When I plug it in my USB port
the thumb drive wants to load its launchpad utility called U3. Until it
completes loading (which Defender does not allow) Windows Explorer will only
show this Removable Drive as a System drive that you cannot write to.

Ok, I found the following article that describes how the software interacts
with the thumb driver:

http://www.everythingusb.com/u3.html

So the utility gets lauched because the driver makes it look like a CD. So
I am making the assumption that WD real time protection should pop up a
message because of driver changes and ask you for Permit or Deny. But
obviously it can't be that easy or you would have done that! So the $64
question is what message did WD issue (or not issue) and what was recorded
in the WD History and the system event logs (under WinDefend)?

Now for the circumvention. Real time protection does not have any influence
on allowed items. Only scans may cause entries to be put in allowed items.
So turn off real time protection (or alternatively some of the real time
agents). Let the U3 utility enable the partition on the thumb drive. Now
turn real time protection back on. I don't know, but hopefully the CD drive
letter and hard drive letter will show up when you click Add (under WD
options) to put the drives in the do not scan list. If not, you can always
turn off the real time agents. I am not thrilled with this approach. That
is why I wanted the information requested in my initial post.

Martin,

Are you using the Launchpad that came with the drive (or was updated using
Sandisks update funtions) or are you using a "hacked" version. The reason I
ask is that there is a Lauchpad "hacker" out there that I look upon with
great suspision.

I use a Sandisk 4GB U3 drive on my home machine, which has had WD since the
Beta, and WD has never made a peep in all the time I've had it. I have also
been using a BB/GeekSquad 512MB U3 drive since December and again not a peep.

Defender and U3 seem to be playing well together.
What message is Defender giving you?
By the way, U3 will not currently run under Vista.

This information is important in helping you solve the problem.

Sorry it took so long to get back as I been real busy. I really don't have
time for this trouble shooting so I just unloaded Defender.

Thanks for the time you all have devoted but I thought it would be a simple
answer from someone. I can't afford the time so I'll use SpySweeper.
