Defender changed my mouse software

Right after updating my microsoft antispyware to defender (offered as I was
surfing the net last night), my software for my mouse quit working. I use a
program called "stroke it" mouse gestures and Kensington mouse software for
mouse buttons. Everything was working fine up until I allowed defender to be
installed? I tried uninstalling defender, but that did not help? What did
defender change? Any suggestions on how to correct? I have two computers, I
installed "stroke it" and Kensington mouse software to that this morning.
They work fine, so it is not that my mouse quit working?

Typically there is a start entry added to the registry to support features
for mouse and/or keyboard. After you installed Windows Defender, did you run
any scans or get any messages? Possibly, the start entry was removed from
the registry. I would go to add/remove programs and uninstall the mouse
software and re-install and see if the problem goes away. You should also
look at the event logs (WinDefend entries) and see if there are any
references to your mouse software.

That's what I had to do, reinstall both softwares. Not the easiest thing to
reconfigure. Never did figure out what Defender changed? And yes I ran
defender before I knew that my mouse software quit working. It will be
interesting to see if the software fails if I run defender again. Which I
may not do.

If you decide to reinstall Windows Defender, then initially specify "allow"
to real time protection messages, don't do any scans until all Window
Defender updates are applied, and then when you do automatic scans make sure
the box "apply default actions to items detected during scan" is unchecked
(Tools->Options->Automatic Scanning). That way Windows Defender should not
modify anything (unless you tell it to). Windows Defender maintains a
History log of actions taken; however, a full log of activities is maintained
in the system event logs. You can go to the Event Viewer: Control
Panel->Performance and Maintenance->Administrative Tools->Event Viewer

If you should lose your mouse functionality again, then a System Restore may
be easier then a re-install of the mouse software; however, I had to advise
you of the safest action to pursue (which was to re-install). Also, I
periodically check the vendor's site for upgraded mouse/keyboard software
instead of using the installation disc that came with the mouse hardware.
Good luck.
