Unable to uninstall Defender

I was at a client tring to install their new AV software, Norton 360. 360
requis that Windows Defender be uninstalled.

I uninstalled Defender, restarted the computer and 360 says that defender is
still installed. I removed the (my) empty folder under "Program files" as
well as cleared out the temp folders. I then restarted... same thing.

I was on with Symantec support who worked with me for about 45 minutes. They
stated that this was most likely a registry problem where traces of Defender
were still present.

Can you help me clear out any traces from the registry?

Hello Andy,

Best and easier to use CCleaner. Run CCleaner to clear up PC Junk.

Note, When you install Ccleaner, uncheck the Yahoo toolbar option.

Mr.G recommend using the default checked boxes and running Advanced maybe
once a month or so

It is fine to have things ticked in SYSTEM, but it would not be advisable to
tick anything in Advanced unless you are sure what you are doing.

On the left side, click on the Contentes menu for more information.

Better if is run in safe mode.

NOTE - The first time you run CCleaner's Issues scanner you'll have to keep
running it back-to-back until it finds nothing. One scenario is a registry
key may only be a reference pointing to a completely different location in
the registry and when it's removed then that reference link is also noticed
as being invalid on a subsequent scan. It's generally a good idea to keep
running the Issues scan until nothing is listed.

As always, you should make sure that you have got a working system restore
point before you run any test, download or install a new game, application,
or software update, you make changes to your computer

if this computer is Vista-WD I believe cannot be uninstalled.
but you can disable the realtime protection by unchecking the box and you
might find Norton will now work.

If it is xp it should uninstall.

In theory, the uninstaller should remove all registry entries; however, it
doesn't always happen in the real world. The recommendation to use Ccleaner
is good because it will hopefully remove left over registry entries. You
could also use the Microsoft cleanup routine:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/cleanup.htm
You might want to install another Microsoft utility:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
If it finds Windows Defender, then see what it cleans up.
I would follow up the proess by using regedit and perform a find on Defender
for any additional keys and delete as appropriate (be careful). :)
