default windows xp programs

how do i change my default dvd (or any other operation)
program. when i put in a dvd xp automatically tries to
use one playback program and of course there's a problem
between it and my system. i want to change it so the
default player is a different program that i know works.
how do i do that? thanks in advance and i'll keep
looking in the mean time. scott
 
Install the "different program" that you want to use first then change the
autoplay option for your drive as follows....

Right click on the drive in "My Computer" and select "properties" then the
"autoplay" tab.

Under "Select a content type... etc" choose "DVD Movie" then

a) click the button marked "Select an action to perform" and choose a
program from the list, click OK.

OR

b) click the button marked "Prompt me each time to choose an action".
