hi,
after a weekend of fun fun fun with roaming user profiles and their security
and caching and this and that, i have come to a point where i understand how
and why everything works except for the first time a user logs in and a
default profile is created for him.

i don't care for creating a template and putting that in the user's profile
folder. i want the default user profile to be the default windows theme
(which in xp's case is the bliss with the nice blue and green bars).

instead iget the modified version where the backgrounds and bars are gray.

is that how it is or am i doing something wrong in my settings.

i have windows 2003 server w/ windows xp for all workstation.

by the way, is the wallpaper supposed to "roam" with the user or is that per
workstation?

thank you in advance,
amir

Hi there

If by "the modified version", you mean Windows Classic, then this could be
one of a few things:

1) The default profile has already been modified.
2) When the machines were deployed, an unattended answer file was used that
specified that the classic desktop should be used
3) The first time the account logged in, it logged in to a Windows 2000 box
(or XP where 1 or 2 , above, is true).

Did you deploy the machines? If not, do you know if any modifications were
made. On a default XP box, Bliss should be the default for a new user.

The desktop wallpaper is a per-user setting. If the wallpaper chosen is one
of the built-in wallpapers, then that should roam properly. If it's a
graphic of the user's choosing, just make sure that this file is either in
the user's profile, home directory, or another location where it can be
accessed with a consistent path. The user's "My Pictures" folder is the
best place for wallpaper.

this was a new install on a test laptop where i personally install xp w/sp1
from the cd rom.
the defualt user is xp themed, but once the laptop joined the domain and i
loged in for the first time (i made sure i deleted any trace of the roaming
profile both from the server and the laptop) it showed the modified theme.
it's all gray with a blank background but xp's fonts.
i also have some group policy settings to prevent caching the profile locally.

regarding the wallpaper. i did use only the built in backgrounds when i did
my test (the bliss background) and it still did not roam.

extra infro:

Test:
when i log in using a non roaming user profile (let's say the administrator)
to the domain on the laptop then i get the usual bliss themed profile.

Group policy settings:
my docs and desktop are redirected to the server.
cached profiles are removed at log off
administrators are added to the profile folder
make redirected folders offline automaticaly is disabled.

When user logon to a domain, Windows will attemp to look for the "user
profile path" setting in the Windows domain user account, if this string is
empty, Windows will attemp to explore either the NETLOGON share to see if
there is any default user profile for that domain is present. If there is
still no profile found, Windows will begin to look for local profile.

In order to create a roaming user profile and make it working well, please
refer to the following KB article:

i know. and i do have a share the is accessible only by the user that created
it and the administrator.
my problem is that it is not roaming.

i did further testing and even when i change the start menu to "classic" and
log of it does show the change in another computer.

all this does point to a local profile but i know that it's not a local
profile and that it is a roaming profile.

Hi,

When you copy the profile to a network location, did you click on the
"Change Type" button to change the profile to a roaming profile?

Lawrence Tse

i don't want to copy my local profile. i want a new "default" one created
once a user first logs in to the domain.

i did check the profile "type" and it is "roaming" once the user logged in.
i checked the server share and i did created the user folder within the
"Profiles$" shared folder. my "Profiles$" shared folder had everyone full
controll for shared permission. and "Write" for "Users" in the security
permissions.

i don't know what else to check or what else to do.
i upgraded the xp's to sp2 thinking that would make a defference, but nope.
these are all fresh installed from the cd-rom. no upgrades and no unattended
installs.

I don't think that the wallpaper "roams" with the user. eg if you have
picture of your kids on the wallpaper and you move to a different
machine you won't see your kids, I believe.

Cheers,

Cliff

Yes it will, provided roaming profiles are configured and the file is still
accessible.
