Having followed the steps for adjusting default shapes in PowerPoint to be
sized at 2cmx2cm at 100%, all my shapes are defaulting instead to
2.54cmx2.54cm at 100%. I've tried several times to select different shapes
with the size I require yet every time the new default is 2.54cm squared. Any
ideas?

Set Defaults only sets fill and line NOT size ot text properties.

If its important obviously you could duplicate the first adjusted shape or
even record a macr0 of insert shape > resize and put the macro on the
toolbar.

As John says, no can do.

But the free PPTools StarterSet includes a tool that lets you memorize the
size/position of a shape and another that lets you "hammer" any other shape to
that size/position. http://starterset.pptools.com

The free demo of our commercial ShapeStyles addin lets you create up to five
styles that can include size among other (many, many other) attributes.

If you only need a few styles, the freebie is all you need; enjoy.

If it's all the same shape, you might also just keep a graphics palette slide
with the shape already sized to what you want, then just copy and paste.
