default font in email not working

i have gone to stationery and fonts and set my preferences (in all cases
garamond, 12, bold). i set my auto signature with the same font choice. when
i create a new message, the bold does not appear for the text. my auto
signature correctly displays with bold. when i reply to a message, bold
correctly appears.

what is your email format?

If you use "Plain text" you have no "Bold".

"Tools/Options/Mail Format"

Change the format to RTF format or HTML then you normaly must see your
signature also in "Bold"
 
I use the pushpin on the bottom right of the send/receive dialog box. Seems
once I click the push pin, it stays pushed in so the simpler option stays
open long enough to see what went wrong.
