I don't remember intentionally choosing Windows Mail as my default email
program, have never used it, don't have a Windows Mail account, and don't
want one, but the "compact" message pops up quite frequently when I'm
working.
Can't find a choice to prevent its appearance, and can't seem to unselect
Windows Mail as the default email program. What am I doing wrong?

Vista comes with the default email program already set to Windows
Mail.

Mainly, you're trying to unselect Windows Mail without selecting another
program instead. The details of how to select another program depend
on what program you are trying to select instead.

Also, if Windows Mail is asking you to compact its database, and it
doesn't have one, just tell it to go ahead and it should shut up until
you run the Windows Mail program another 100 times, which you
don't plan to do.
