deepnet explorer - free IE secure replacement

A

http://deepnetexplorer.com/default.asp

says no spyware, adware etc.

No browser helper objects etc

Claims to be more secure than Mozilla, Firefox, IE etc.

It does however have a search bar incorporated, which will apparently
display advertising in sidebar when it displays search results - but
so does google.

They are quite open about this.

I have installed it, and it is fast, tabbed browsing etc.

I cannot test for it's claims about security etc, but maybe someone
else can ?

There were sites where you could check your browser for various
exploits posted recently - can anyone remind me ?

PS - this may be my first ever post about freeware which I have not
seen here before - a first :) (bet I am wrong :)

cheers

A really interesting piece...
2.5+ mb ...it looks at that it is still using IE engine, hmmm
wondering if it is so. If it is still using IE engine, it
reminds me something I read about the new IE in M$ XPsp2SR
from I *think* I read that in XPsp2SR, IE will disable BHO
and stuff like that...could it be this one one step ahead
before the sp2 and modify IE like that???

comments?

btw, the site looks like the kind that would go commercial in
anytime any day- athough of course it could always still offer
things as freeware...

Yet anyhow, at least for now, I'would certainly be still
sticking to Firefox...:) but truely an interesting piece.

It does use the IE engine - it's claims for enhanced security seem to
be based solely on blocking BHOs.

Still, it is faster on my machine.

Should also mention it has an integrated P2P client, and an RSS news
feed client also.

About going commercial ? The license is for personal use - I was
alerted to it via ZDNet who said that the company was targeting the
commercial world - organisations who have problems with users
downloading nasties. My company has hundreds of PCs in remote
locations, using vpn access but independent dsl connections -
therefore very difficult to ban sites with nasties on them - but we
would have to pay for deepnet installations

cheers

There was a post in May. IE shell similar to Avant apparently. Doesn't
seem to have gained much interest. Does the site still work? Can't reach
it from this end of the world.

Yes, I think so, too. I don't have a company myself, but if I
did, I will rather go for Firefox if security is the piroity.

Worked for me just now.

It is, (but I am not sure if it uses the GNU license, like Linux)
But some people prefer to use 1.x versions of software (AFAIK, people consider
this to be stable). On this case they could go with the full Mozilla.

Thanks for the tip. It was interesting.

It defaults to allow activeX but you can disable it.

The installation changed my control panel display settings to "use
transition effects for tips and toolbars"

In trying to use help to see how to enable it to start with a blank
page, it crashed.

"Home" was an MSN advert.

As for more secure - I seriously doubt it is any more secure than I.E.
with activeX enabled. It looks like I.E. in sheep's clothing.

Didn't run long enough to see if it was any faster.

It is uninstalled and I'm using Firefox

The MSN page is the default for IE (nagware out-of-the-box ;), though I
don't see why an IE shell would want to revert to it.

Yes, when I installed it, it kept my previous ie homepage, favourites
etc

Is there a way to specify a "blank page." (In other words, not go on
line until I ask for something?) I didn't see that in the preferences
and didn't look very hard . . . Firefox/Mozilla works great and never
causes me problems, but I am curious to see if there is a IE browser
to recommend to the folks that ask me (and think it is too hard to
learn another browser - - those poor lost, challenged, souls)

Setting the homepage to 'about:blank' (without quotes) should work for
any browser.
