Did you use EFS that comes with XP Pro? If so here are some links with info

Sorry I don't know. There are many gotchas with EFS, so that it's been
called by some the delayed recycle bin. I am guessing you didn't designate
a recovery agent or backup the certificate?

Look at the last link to see if that helps.

Jason... I feel your pain about your files. Been there - done that.

In the unlikely event you recently did a clean install -- and are now
restoring your encrypted files or folders, onto your PC from a backup you
made -- unless you remembered to export your Encryption key off the old
installation onto a floppy, before doing a clean install you could be SOL.

Hey, I've made this mistake... and so have alot of other folks. (Hopefully,
this isn't the nature of your problem)

Most people who use EFS don't seem to think about this important item, until
later on they're seeing the "Access Denied" message on some encrypted files
or folders they made.

Ironically, Microsoft didn't give the average home user a heads up - back at
the beginning - about importance of backing up your key if you use EFS - in
the documentation.
