Dead Motherboard?

Sorry for the crosspost.

After returning from a camping trip I hit the power button on my
computer.

The red light on the front came on but no display. I noticed that the
red light is burning solid. I took the cover off the computer and made
sure connections were tight. When I power it up a red light on the
motherboard flashes once. There is a green light on the motherboard
that stays lit. However the onboard fan does not start. The fan on the
computer case does work.

The last time I used the computer (yesterday) everything was running
fine.

The computer has a 2.8GhZ P-IV with WinXP Pro
512 MB DDR
120 MB Maxtor 7200 rpm HDD
40 MB Maxtor 7200 rpm HDD
Pioneer DVDROM
Pioneer DVD-Writer

The computer is only about 1.5 years old.

Any ideas? Thank you.

Hi,

First make sure you have the CPU fan connected to the mb. Unplug it then
replug it back into its socket. Many boards will not boot if they sense the
HSF is not working.
Second thing I suspect is the power supply. If you can substitute it that
may do the trick. It matters not how old the computer is.
If you feel comfortable pulling one out of another computer and sticking it
in yours that may solve your mystery.

Barring that's not the problem then I would disconnect all peripherals
(CD-ROM, floppy, including hdd) and see if it will boot. If no happiness
then it could be the mb itself

Thanks very much for the suggestions you've offered. I'll try them in
that order. I really had no idea where to start.

Thanks again.

If there is enough power for lights but not for the fans it might be a power
supply problem but when they go out they usually are totally gone. Make sure
the setting for Watts is right on the back of the power supply. Check the
power supply connection to the MB.
