Day 2. I still cannot get to my Hotmail with my three XP computers but I can
with Vista computer. All are using same wireless connection.

Here's the kicker. If I use my neighbor's wireless signal all four computers
can get to my Hotmail.

Question:

Why can Vista get to my Hotmail and not the XP's?

Mystery solved, sort of.

I tracked this intermittent problem to Charter Communications. Seems that
Charter has "server issues" here in the Midwest. The big problem is that some
of their servers are blocking access to Microsoft sites that are heavily
protected with their 128 bit ppsecure system. Yeah, I know some people told
me that it was a "local" problem but that isn't saying much. The thing here
is that it seems that Vista can go around this issue better than XP.

Lesson: be prepared to have XP and Vista systems to keep your internet
connections up and running. If one OS fails then maybe the other will pull
through.

I feel sorry for those poor techs at Charter who have to fix this software
issue.

Hi Anonynous,

Yes, I tried every reasonable Microsoft connection. No go. I tried every
reasonable tweaking of my IE and computers' software. No go.

You're right. It is a Charter Communication problem. Some of their servers
in the Midwest are blocking access to Microsoft's highly encripted/certified
secure sites. My Vista computer seemed to get around it all. Usually I don't
panic when this happens because good websites and servers get up and running
within hours if not minutes but this problem is entering day 2 (about 36
hours that I'm aware of.)

Thanks for the suggestions anyways.

Source, please?

PA Bear,

OK, I was being a bit facetious about the 128 bit encryption remark, but I
did put many hours into this problem because my email is important to me. I
spoke witha Charter Com phone tech. She told me that some Charter servers in
the Midwest were having "issues" with "secure" websites such as Microsoft's
websites and Hotmail. The tech told me that Charter had been working on the
problem since Friday. I was not the only customer to call on this problem.
For me, this problem had persisted from Friday morning to about Saturday
midafternoon.

As far as source is concerned, I stand by every thing that I said regardng
my hours spent troubleshooting, including speaking with Netgear tech and the
tech from Charter. The reason I spent so much time on this is because I never
had a problem with the secure websites and I never had experienced Hotmail
being so inaccessible for more than 2 hours.

Update:

Around 3pm Saturday, May 10, 2008, CST the issues were resolved (on my
server, in my neighborhood, at least) and now my XP's and Vistas are running
smoothly. No problems so far with Microsoft sites.
