"data is a Windows system folder" ? Where is the reference ? How to delete ?

I have a folder named "data".

When I try to delete it through WinExplorer a popup is displayed:

data is a Windows system folder ... It cannot be deleted

First: How can I list all Windows System folders ?

Then I opened a command prompt and typed:

attrib -s data

It was accepted but the delete afterwards does not work either.

How do I find out for which purpose WinXP needs this system folder ?

How can I get rid of this folder otherwise ?

As a rule of thumb, leave the %windir% folder and its subfolders alone.

That folder may or may not be created by the Microsoft "Santa" X-Mas
screen saver. Just check with the folder's content.

See above.
