Windows Explorer Doesn't Open Folders

I had malware that caused a popup when I double clicked a folder icon
in the "files" window. I've gotten rid of the malware, but now when I
double click a folder, it asks what application to use to open the
file and brings up the menu of programs.

Looking at Folder Options / File Types I see that I have a new option
called "OCT." I suspect that was the malware hook. But the "delete"
option is greyed out, so I cannot delete it, either.

How do I get normal behavior back?

That helped. Now when I double click a folder it brings up a new
explorer window with the "search" panel open and wants me to enter my
search criteria. Is that really the default action? How do I get it
to just open the folder - either no left panel or "Folders" for the
left panel?

I've fixed it.

The action "OCT" was still showing for "File Folders." When it was
the default, I got the "pick a program" action again. When "find" was
the default I got the search action. Searching the registry, "OCT"
was defined for "Directory" rather than "File Folder." Deleting the
"OCT" registry entry restored the desired functionality.

That's great news! Thanks for reporting back.
