Hidden file and folders are not displayed

Talib

Hi All,

I've faced this problem many times wherein I am unable to view hidden files
and folders instead of enabling the 'Show hidden files and folers' option in
folder options on tools menu. I even tried editing the registry settings but
it reverts back to the 'Do not show hidden files and folders' settings.

I know this situation is caused by a virus. But even after a complete anti
virus scan it didn't work.

My main concern to view hidden files is that I want to delete Autorun.inf
file on the C drive which does not allow me to open C drive simply by double
clicking on it.
Whenever I double click on the C drive an "open with" dialog box appears
which asks me to select a program to open it.

Can anyone help me in this ?

Regards.

If you know the location and name of the file, and its truely
C:\autorun.inf then just do it on the command line.
start -> run -> cmd -> <enter>
Then type c:
then cd \
then del autorun.inf

you might have to type attrib -h -s -r autorun.inf

Give that a try.

Hi Big Al,

I have already tried the command line you mentioned, but the message I got is
'unable to change the attributes' .

Your problem may be the cops not the robbers. What are your anti-virus
and anti-spyware arrangements?

Hi Talib, Big Al, Gerry, Reysantos

Few days b4 even i had the same problem and sesolved it by this method only.
The Autorun.inf is a virus, when cleaned it resets one of ur registery
values...check the below given registry settings and if ur problem is
resolved do reply to my mail id ragav.sharma@gmail. com, (e-mail address removed).

Check the registry setting:-
Start>Run>Regedit>OK
Now navigate to:-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
Advanced\Folder\Hidden\SHOWALL]
In the right pane the CheckedValue should be 0x00000001(1) and
DefaultValue should be 0x00000002(2).

if any values found to be 0 or both 1 then all ur files should be hidden
only...and never to be seen....

Double click on the checkedvalue or default value and a screen opens. change
the value to 1 and 2 respectively so that the value can change in the Data
lane.

Thanks & Regards,

Ragavendran N

hi talib,
i even got same problem as urs, i was not able to open hidden files and when
i try to open any hard disk in my computer it would show open with box.
the open with box is due to virus or trojan. the autorun.inf was infected.
so i deleted it using an anti software which i download from internet. it is
from www.drweb.com. i already have another antivirus running but that did not
detect and could not help me with the open with problem.

for the hidden folder problem i went n changed the value to 1 as advised by
ragavendran, hidden folder problem is resolved.
any other discussions or enquiries about any new problems, that may arise in
ur computer, also i may have encountered and tried to fix it, ill be happy to
share the solution. feel free to contact me on (e-mail address removed)
thank you again Ragavendran, Ray Snatos,Talib,Garry, Big Al

I have looked back at your posts and what you are trying to achieve is a
little confused. It does not help that you jumped into a conversation
about another persons problems, which you see as similar to your own.
Can you clarify the points below.

What file can't you see that you think you should be able to see? Name
and file extension please.

What folder do you think the file should be in?

What problem do you think the file is causing?

What is the message telling you of the problem? An exact copy of the
message would help.

See if the method suggested here helps
http://www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-tips/another-way-to-hide-files-and-folders-in-windows-xp/

What are your existing anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements?

The reference amvo.exe relates to malware, which you have only partially
removed.

You can disable / remove the attempt to run the file using Autoruns.

A safer way than msconfig to disable / remove unwanted start up items is
to use Autoruns.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

With Autoruns you can uncheck an item, which disables it from starting,
or you can can right click an item and then delete it. If you uncheck
you can recheck to re-enable the item. It is a much safer approach than
editing the Registry. Another useful feature of the programme is that
you can right click an item and select Search Online to get information
about the item selected

I have found this link containing information about amvo.exe
http://www.prevx.com/filenames/1360796256778365074-X1/AMVO.EXE.html

You probably have a "Facebook" virus. I had it. This is how to resolve it.
I copied it from the web. Be sure to start in Safe Mode COMMAND PROMPT.

Here is the resolution:
- Start the computer in Safe mode (command prompt), go to the
Windows\System32 directory and remove the Splm.
- Remove the directory by running "Rmdir Splm /s", exit and reboot computer.
- open Regedit and search for all occurences of NCSJAPI32 and remove.

This NCSJAPI32 application is registered as "Intelli Mouse Pro Version 2.0B"
(pretty sneaky spyware).

One more thing. There is a little cleanup to get things back to normal. Use
Regedit and navigate to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\Advanced.
Delete the "Folder" folder. It was created by the virus and keeps the radio
buttons from changing. Change the value of the "Hidden" DWORD to 1.
