Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

Hi all,

I am trying to install Windows XP Pro OEM on a newly built pc. The disc
boots to setup fine, I created a new partition and proceeded to install.
Setup copied some files over and then rebooted. Upon booting, setup
continues and within a minute or two I receive the error "Data error (cyclic
redundancy check)". Clicking OK shows more detail:

---
Error:
Installation Failed: D:\I386\asms. Error Message : Data error (cyclic
redundancy check).

Fatal Error:
One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be
installed.
---

I thought it might be a problem with the optical drive so I swapped in a
different one, but I received the same error. Thinking the disc was bad, I
returned the disc to ZipZoomFly for an exchange. I eventually get the
replacement... I assumed they simply replaced the disc because they sent me
back the same product key. In the meantime I had installed Windows XP x64
edition beta so that kept me happy. I decided to wipe x64 off and reinstall
the OEM disc, and I get the same stupid error above. Now I'm really
frustrated and I don't know what to think. Did ZZF send the same bad disc
back to me thinking I wouldn't notice? Or is there something with these OEM
discs that just don't agree with Pioneer optical drives?

Well, I'm now beyond the 30-day replacement period for ZZF. I'm looking for
suggestions... should I try and get a replacement disc from Microsoft?
Anyone else experience this kind of problem before?

Thanks,
Dave

Yes, you have another bad CD. Since Microsoft does not replace
OEM CDs, it would be best if you purchased a "Retail Version"
of Windows XP. Retail versions come in a box and are available
at your favorite store that sells computer software.

.. . . or you may have a marginal CD drive. In your situation
I would ask a friend to burn a copy of the CD.

Get in touch with someone in ZipZoomFly's Customer Service
department and explain what's happened. Try to make contact by
phone as opposed to email. It shouldn't matter whether you
purchased the software 30 or 300 days ago. All you're asking for
is the replacement of a 25¢ CD. The item of real value is the CD
key. They're not going to send you a replacement for that.

Do not purchase any additional software until you've exhausted
all the possible solutions to this problem. Right now all
ZipZoomFly has given you is an expensive piece of paper (the CD
Key) and a coaster (the CD). That doesn't make for a very
satisfied customer.

Well.... I sure hope you find an answer to that problem :)
As I just stumbled on the same damn error message
Same scenario: new parts, building a PC, this time around
trying to use a different CDRW drive (Rosewill). I guess it
has something to do with CD drives. If I figure it out first,
I'll post the answer. Good luck to you too.
