Cursor Crawl

Can anyone tell me what causes my cursor to begin slowly crawling up andto
the left side of my screen? (and how to fix the problem?) I am using the
same wireless Microsoft Intellimouse and desktop computer that I have been
using for over a year. Suddenly I am having this annoying problem all the
time.

Is it a LaserMouse and if you thump the desktop hard, (the top of the desk,
not the computer screen, of course), does it stop the cursor drift?

I have an wired optical mouse here at work and watched my cursor drift about
an inch yesterday. No clue why. I just wish it had done some of my work
while it was at it instead of entertaining me for a few moments.

Not sure what the difference in a laser mouse and a wireless mouse is, but
the stamp on the bottom of the mouse says "Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer
2.0" & Microsoft Model:1007

Never tried thumping the desktop hard - and right at this second the cursor
is not drifting, so I can't try it.

I have read that this might be caused by the cursor still trying to
following the last move I made with it because the computer is busy doing
other things in the background. I have a new, fast computer with plenty of
open memory, so I cannot imagine that could be the actual problem. Thanks for
your input.

I have an ordinary old ball mouse, and occasionally I see this during idle
moments (never while I'm actually using the mouse). What drifts, however, is
only the mouse pointer, not the cursor (insertion point). It could be some
kind of RF or electrical interference.

It was the pointer, not the cursor. Usually if the cursor is moving with my
hands off of the keyboard it means one of two things. Either I've put a book
on top of the keys or one of my cats is trying to edit my files.

Not, its an optical mouse - not laser. Check that there aren't any tiny
balls of fluff in the optical lens recess on the bottom of the mouse. That's
what was causing it on my mouse. If it is completely clean, then it must be
a poltergeist!

Hi All,

One other (remote) possibility: I used to get that effect sometimes when I
used an optical mouse with a visually very "busy" mouse mat. Maybe tiny
vibrations caused by the movement of people around me were combining with the
particular pattern of the mat and confusing the mouse. Don't know. Started
using another mat and the problem went away.

Or maybe it *was* a poltergeist - an OEM one that had to stay with the mat.

Cheers.

I searched for this because I have a Logitech M325 and my pointer on the screen will drift to the top right of the screen and I cannot control the pointer with the mouse. I thought it was the battery until I went through about 5 at the house and then bought a new pack at the store and it's still happening. I can't find any rhyme or reason. I have found if I shut my laptop down and restart it will reset back to where I can control it but it will eventually happen again with no common time limit. I tried to download the drivers specific to the mouse this morning and it still happens.
