currupt file error after newly formated hardrive with XP Pro OS

Hey,

I really need some help cause i am out of ideas...i posted this yesterday
and got a few replies but didnt work so im reposting it

"I just bought a new maxtor 100gig harddrive and had no problems installing
it in the computer...Basicly i want to install XP pro on this new drive and
transfer all my files from my old drive (also XP pro OS) onto the new drive
then i want to use my old drive for a Linux OS. Anywayz i was able to install
XP pro on the new drive and everything went smooth i then connected to the
net and went straight to windows update and got all the latest patches
including sp2...but then i went to download.com and got AVG antivirus and
also adware SE and Firefox mozilla...but each and everyprogram would not open
or unzip...sorry im at work and cant exactly remember the error messages as
they were different for each program...so i thought i might have got hit with
a virus right away so i reformatted the harddrive again and installed xp and
went to download.com first to get avg antivirus but same problem
happened...(for avg it says the files are corrupt and you need to reinstall a
fresh copy) o yea and everytime it would stall on installing/opening up a
program my computer motherboard would beep (i.e not my speakers)...your help
will be greatly appreciated...if exact error message is needed ill post later
in the day...thanks"

The exact errors either say "failed" halfway in unziping a setup file... or
it says "file is currupt...please download a new copy and re-try"

So after spending 6 hours yesterday of trying the i got suggestions plus
reformating the harddrive twice i had no success : /
Im sure this problem is not caused by a virus cause i never connected to the
net and got the same problem...i had an old winzip setup file on cd which
actually worked to install but wen i used winzip to open up other setup files
it gave me the same error...do you think that maybe my win xp pro cd has gone
bad...forgot to install some files or something...although it cant be cause
everything else seems to running okay...and i guess it cant be the new hard
drive cause its able to format and run the XP...

Please some suggestions will be appreciated....

Memory possibly.

Try removing half, perform the unzip process, if it works, a removed memory
stick may have a bad chip. If not replace the remove RAM and remove the
"other" sticks and perform the unzip process again.

When/if the unzip process works, logical switching out of the RAM can tell
you which stick has the bad chip.

Hey danny thanks for the suggestion...ill try this...i actually just got a
couple of used rdram about 3 months ago (upgraded from 256 to 512) which i
did have a problem installing them at first but then they finally worked...

Hey the other thing that just came to mind and i just realized...that the
setup files that failed to open were all download files...and someone said in
a forum that u could lose packets when you download files...this could be a
possibility because i my internet is via a wireless adapter connected to a
main router...so if anyone has an idea of how to prevent losing packets....my
adapter signal to the router is good but is sometimes not constant as in it
will temporary disconnect and reconnect...it actually happens quite
frequently with my old drive but never had such a problem...

Thanks in advance

You can have a bad download for any reason. The protocol is good, but even it can't control what it receives.

For all you know those 3 files COULD be corrupt at the place you got them.

Try somewhere else. If you're using XP's built in de-archiver, just my opinion, but I've used winrar for years, and no complaints. winzip, you'll need other dearchivers for those it can't handle. I just found outthat ISO is one of rar's the other day. I got tired of trying to remember which dearchiver handled which archive. and rar handled all of them. and then some.

rar can in some cases even repair an archive.

1st I'd go look elsewhere to download and see if everything everywhere iscrap.
2nd download anything from somewhere you know there's good files. Something you grabbed in the past that worked.
3rd try winrar to dearc them.

Hey husky thanks for the suggestion....ive actually downloaded some of the
software from their main websites like firefox mozilla and AVG so i dont
think that was the problem...and yes i have downloaded stuff from the same
websites and never had any trouble...i actually do have winrar on my old
drive but i couldnt find the CD to install it on the new one...i guess i
could copy the program files from my old drive to the new one hopefully it
will work and i can try that...thanks again

You've never seen data get corrupted once it got to a drive ? Just because the files on the site were good once, doesn't mean they are stillgood.

The web is full of bots, and virii and other trash with nothing to do buthunt for stuff to destroy.

And if it's the XP built in dearchiver, I'd go with winrar rather than doing a reinstall of the OS.
