PROBLEM WITH XP PRO AFTER INSTALLATION

Hey,
I just bought a new maxtor 100gig harddrive and had no problems installing
it in the computer...Basicly i want to install XP pro on this new drive and
transfer all my files from my old drive (also XP pro OS) onto the new drive
then i want to use my old drive for a Linux OS. Anywayz i was able to install
XP pro on the new drive and everything went smooth i then connected to the
net and went straight to windows update and got all the latest patches
including sp2...but then i went to download.com and got AVG antivirus and
also adware SE and Firefox mozilla...but each and everyprogram would not open
or unzip...sorry im at work and cant exactly remember the error messages as
they were different for each program...so i thought i might have got hit with
a virus right away so i reformatted the harddrive again and installed xp and
went to download.com first to get avg antivirus but same problem
happened...(for avg it says the files are corrupt and you need to reinstall a
fresh copy) o yea and everytime it would stall on installing/opening up a
program my computer would beep...your help will be greatly appreciated...if
exact error message is needed ill post later in the day...thanks

Thanks, daz

Daz:

Windows XP SP2 will sometimes 'block' a zipped file according to built in
security criteria.

Right-click on the zipped files and select "Properties" then unblock the
file.

Please provide the exact error messages.

Now on the other hand, why aren't you downloading the apps from their
respective sites. Getting software from the creators site is not only more
trustworthy, it's much more trustworthy that you will get the most recent
app/files.

Hey thanks, ill try this...but this also doesnt explain why it happened after
i reformatted the hard drive and didnt get the sp2 patch...i.e. i got the
antivirus first and mozilla and both didnt open...my xp pro cd is like 3
years old so it didnt come with the sp2...just to state the obvious...and
also i forgot to clarify that the beeping sound after every setup up file
failed to unzip was coming from the motherboard and not the speakers...

It may be that they are trustworthy, yet the source is more trustworthy
on getting the proper up-to-date app/file.

Anyhoo try these and see if they help:

Click Start > Run, type in: regsvr32 zipfldr.dll and press Enter

or

Open either Explorer or MyComputer.
On the Menu bar click Tools > Folder Options > File Types tab.
Scroll to the zip ext.
Click once on it and click the Change button.
Select Compressed (zipped) Folder.
Click OK.

So i spent another 6 hours yesterday trying to fix it....noting worked i
tried the suggestions u guys gave....so basicly to summarize the main problem
my computer has is unzipping files...most, if not all, of the error messages
i get back say that the setup file is corrupt....i got lucky and found an old
winzip setup file on one of my cds...it did manage to install properly but
then wen i used it to unzip other files it gave me similar errors that the
compressed setup files or folders are "Corrupt" do u guys think that maybe my
windows xp pro cd was bad and didnt install all the files...and brian i did
try that "regsvr32 zipfldr.dll" and it executed fine... again any help
would be appreciated...its very fustrating spending so many hours to fix this
thing...thanks

If you have a Retail XP cd try a Repair install.
How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315341

You will still retain all of your apps/files/data with the exception of
MS critical updates, which will need to be re-installed. No matter what
though, you should still backup any important data in the event that
something goes wrong.
