Curiosity: Folder pop-up on boot-up

G

Guest

Try as I might, I have not found a way to fix this. Dell Inspiron XP SP2 (duo
core). When I searched out and updated the driver for the ATI Catalyst
Control Center 7.2, since then the folder (C:\Program Files\ATI) will
automatically open on the desktop on every boot-up. I've done the Folder
Options, Uninstalled/reinstalled ATI driver, rolled back the driver even.
Disabled the hotkey to open the control center. (Even did 'hidden folder' --
that didn't work.) Had to chkdsk /r /p for another reason and that didn't
work. What's left short of reinstalling the OS?

It sounds like you have a startup entry in your computer's
registry that points to a location with a space in the path.
The entire path should be enclosed within quotation marks. When
that's done, the correct program is launched at startup. If the
quotes are missing, it results in a folder that contains the
program being opened instead.

If you want help resolving the problem, try Option 1. If you
want to correct the problem yourself, scroll down to Option 2.

Option 1.
Download this utility.

Courtesy of Doug Knox, MS-MVP
Windows XP Startup Tracker
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_starttrack.htm

Extract the file from the zip folder and run the program.
Hit the View log button.
Copy the information under each of the Registry entries and
paste it into a response to this message. Don't include the
Running Processes or Running Services section.

Option 2.

Start the registry editor by going to Start -> Run and entering
regedit.exe in the Open box.
Note: If Run is not present on your Start menu, hit the Windows
key + R key.
Click OK.
Navigate to the following registry key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Look in the right hand pane for an entry in the Data column
that starts with the following.

C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\

Right click on the name of this entry and select Modify from
the menu.
Click in the Value data box to remove the highlighting.
Enclose the data in quotation marks.
Click OK.

Check the RunOnce key below this one if it exists.

Do the same procedure for this registry key.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Restart your computer to see if the folder still opens.

Good luck

I looked at option 2 first, but I did not see the particular HKEY you
advised. The closest was:
ATICCC "C:\Program Files\ATI
Technologies\ATI.ACE\cli.exe"

This was one I in fact found in a start-up locater program (What's running)
and also through the services driver editor.

XP startup tracker output below. The one that is missing on the output is a
(default) key that had a blank data space.

Incidently if of any help. There is only one folder shown in C:\Program
Folder\ATI and that's C:\...\ATI\CIM .

It looks like this key might contain the problem entry.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

The last entry is missing quotes.

StartCCC C:\Program Files\ATI
Technologies\ATI.ACE\Core-Static\CLIStart.exe

Here's the easy way to see if this value is causing your
problem.

Scroll down to the bottom of this web site and download this
program from Microsoft.
AutoRuns for Windows v8.73
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/autoruns.mspx?wt.svl=whatsnew

After you extract the files from the zip folder run
autoruns.exe.
In Autoruns, click on the Logon tab.
Look under HKCU\\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
for an entry titled StartCCC.
Remove the check mark from the box next to this entry.
Also, look under Startup for an entry titled CCC.lnk.
You can uncheck this entry as well.
Close Autoruns and restart your computer.
If the folder does not open on startup, we'll know that entry
under HKCU is the problem one.

The autoruns is a nice little program.

What you advised worked. I did a misstep by checking the wrong ATICCC (along
with the .dll) and the window still opened. I ran the Startup Tracker to
double check and realized I checked the wrong one (mistook the wrong HKCU vs
HKLM; also the StartCCC lacked a logo so missed it completely). Corrected,
rebooted, and now there is no pop up folder.

Thank you!
