You're running in what's called "Small Footprint Mode." To change back and
forth from this mode to regular mode, just double-click on the border.

Did you try to do a system restore? you can access it by right clicking on
your My Computer icon, and going to properties. there you should be able to
go back a few days and get back what you lost, and if you find that it
performs better without the restore and you did, it will give you the option
to go ahead again

I found a great little program at sysinternals.com called "process
explorer". It's a free download and shows what programs are running, what
files are involved, what programs generated them, etc....
I found control/alt/delete showed processes running but didn't let me know
what they were or if it was safe to shut them down.

It sounds like you're running Task Manager in "Small Footprint
Mode." Simply double-click anywhere along the top or side borders to
return to a normal view. Alternatively, pressing <Ctrl>+<Tab> will
allow you to cycle between the various displays, and <Alt>+<F4> will
close it.

You're kidding, right? Why should the OP use system restore to "fix" a
perfectly normal, if under-documented, display option?
