Ctrl Alt Del does not work!

I have a peculiar issue - I use Windows XP Professional on my laptop. A couple of days ago, I accidentally clicked on the "Help" link in the logon (Ctrl Alt Del) screen. Once I click OK on the Ctrl Alt Del help dialog, I come back to the logon screen, but the "Help" link still has the focus and Windows does not recognize Ctrl Alt Del at all. The only thing I can do is press space bar or ENTER to get the Help screen again!!! This is so annoying that my computer is now unusable!!! Ctrl Alt Del just does not work and I'm stuck in the logon screen - all I can do is press the power off button to go to standby. When I return from standby, this issue still persists

I've tried Alt-Tab, Ctrl-Tab, Start key and other key combinations, but nothing helps remove the focus from the "Help" link. Is this a bug? Are there workarounds that will help me login

Thanks for your tim

Hi M K,

Try pressing F8 to boot in safe mode, and choose 'Last known good
configuration.'

Good luck

The 'Last Known Good Configuration' did not work! I also tried Safe Mode, with no results

Let me explain the problem again
1. I boot my laptop to Windows XP Professional and see the "Press Crtl Alt Del to logon" screen
2. Ctrl Alt Del does not work (no response from the system
3. The "Help" link at the bottom right corner has the focus
4. If I hit space bar or ENTER, it shows me the help dialog for Ctrl Alt De
5. When I return back from the help dialog, Ctrl Alt Del still does not wor

Once in a while, through random keystorkes, I've been able to get Ctrl Alt Del work (but this is becoming rare) and am able to login. The problem is not with the keyboard since Ctrl Alt Del works once I'm logged in (to invoke task manager or shutdown etc.)

Is there any way to get anything else shown on the logon screen? Is there a way to remove the focus from the "Help" link on the logon screen? I feel that's where the problem is

I'm tired of this problem since my computer is becoming unusable. I do not have access to the original licensed copy of XP to reimage my hard disk. :

Thank

If you can get logged in you could disable the Ctrl Alt Del in Group
policies

Start/run type gpedit.msc
under Computer configuration\windows settings\security settings\local
policies\security options
double click the line : Interactive Logon: Do not require Ctrl+Alt+Del
check the Enabled box.

Hope this helps
