Renaming catroot and catroot2 fixes the problem sometimes.
Not always. And not always for the same reason.
I have installed the fixblast and the MS RPC security fix on at least 2
dozen machines and while this problem doesn't always come up, when it does
it can be caused by several things.
Of all the machines I have fixed, 6 machines did not accept the update no
matter what I did. I found that two of the machines were using a pirated
copy of XP but the other four were valid. I had to install the RPC patch and
instruct the user how to set filters and/or nat entries on their router.
Also how to restrict several ports with their firewall.
One thing about all four of the valid copies that stumped me was the fact
that none of them were able to install any of the past updates or fixes. I
tried for several hours total trying to find a common factor but no joy.
There is nothing on the MS site about it and as far as I know that is why MS
released the RPC patch.
As an aside, I suggested to the holders of the pirated copies to at least
buy a valid copy of XP even if they didn't want to use the activation
feature. I don't believe in and will not accept the activation feature but
MS deserves their "30 pieces of silver".
