Cruzer mini dead... again

Way back (about a year ago), I had the first generation 128 mb Cruzer
Mini (the fat one). I tied the lanyard to a belt loop on my pants, and
then just kept the stick in my pocket, much like a wallet in a chain.

So, one day, i plug in my jumpdrive, when suddenly....

It doesn't read!

I try again and again on maybe... 10 computers, about 7 XP, 2 mac, and
even one Linux. All either read as dead, or aren't even detected at
all.

Bummer, I think. So, i spend the summer without a flash drive at my
disposal. About a month ago, I FINALLY recieved the replacement for it
from Sandisk, only to discover that it was the 2nd generation one (the
thin one). I thought to myself, "WOW! THIS WILL ACTUALLY FIT IN THE
FRONT USB PORTS IN THE LIBRARY!"

And it did. But it will no more. That's because I'm not taking it to
the library... or anywhere for that matter.

After saving a powerpoint presentation, a dialogue box comes up.
"Yabba-yabba.ppt cannot be saved", or something like that. Basically,
it was saying "we can't save it, and we don't care!".

For symptoms, see case one.

I've decided to give up on the whole Cruzer mini idea. I'm thinking of
switching to Lexar's (?) Jumpdrive. Reliablity?

But first, anybody know why the |-|311 this happened????

Thanks for slogging through my tales. Help is greatly appreciated.

Check and make sure the drive is not write protected first. There is a
little switch that you may not have noticed that is set to make the
drive read only. It is also possible that the library has prevented the
capability of saving to an external drive like you are using. Try the
Mini Cruzer on a different computer to make sure it is the drive and not
the computer.

Sandisk is an excellent company and their USB Flash Drives are awesome.
Lexar also makes good ones. I personally own one of each as well as a
Soyo one and a Kingston one. Never had a problem with any of them, but
I have never tried to use them in a library either.

You may also have had a problem with Powerpoint and not the fault of
either the computer or the flash drive. I would do a little more
testing before tossing it out the window ;)

In both Windows 2000 and XP, you usually must click on the System tray Icon
before you disconnect the USB drive. If you do not, you could (and did)
corrupt the unit.
