Creating Templates, Need Advice

What is the best way to setup a template?

I am building a PPT file and want to preserve test look and feel and custom
animations as well as image custom animations, background and other
miscellaneous graphic/page layout lements.

In brief I want to let people insert their own text and images but preserve
the properties of the text or image box.

Dont think slide master is the answer, perhaps there is another way?

Those are two very different versions of PPT. I recommend that you don't try
to use the same template on both -- it will only cause you frustration.

Basically, you want to apply background graphics and elements to the slide
master. And you want to apply text formatting and stuff to the placeholders
on the slide master.

If you have image placeholders (2008 Mac), you can apply specific animations
to those. Then when the users click the icon and add the picture to that
placeholder, the animations will apply to the picture that's been added.
Same with text animations -- apply them to the placeholder on the slide
masters.
