PowerPoint 2003: applying a template to an existing presentation

Dear All,

I have the following problem with PowerPoint 2003: I have created a
PowerPoint template in which slide and title masters are defined. The new
template works just fine for blank presentations.

However, I have a problem when applying this new design template to existing
presentations - whenever I do it, the background of the title master does not
overwrite the background of the title slide of the existing presentation.

Here is what I do:
°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°
I open an existing PPT document and then click on "Design" in the MS
PowerPoint toolbar. in the "Slide Design" pane on the right, I then choose to
apply the new template I created to it. Now, PowerPoint adapts the slides of
the existing presentation according to what is defined in the slide master of
my new template. However, this does *not* work for the first/title page -
there, the background that the existing presentation has is not overwritten
with the background defined in the newly created template. If I want to apply
the background of the first slide, then I have to do so manually.

NB: the background is a "real background", not just an image spreading over
the whole slide extension.

I am now wondering whether there is any way to ensure that PowerPoint
applies the background for the first slide to the existing presentation, as
defined in the slide master.

Many thanks in advance,

Fabio

I hope we got this worked out over on Experts Exchanges. Since your original
presentation doesn't use a title slide master, I think you need to apply the
title master to the title slide using Format | Slide Design.

Or...maybe not! ;-)

Well, in the end, yes it was resolved. To sum up, the problem was that in the
existing presentation, the title slide had been manually inserted, thus the
link with the slide master got broken (I found out about this by adding a new
slide and then choosing the "title" layout - this did not add a slide similar
to the title slide).

Now, if you want the new design template to apply to the manually inserted
title slide too, as Echo suggested, right-click on one of the slides and
choose "Background" and there check "omit background graphics from master"
and then "apply to all". Now, apply the new design template - it will
overwrite the background of the title slide(s) in the existing presentation.

Thanks again, I very much appreciated your help!

Best,
Fabio
