Creating associations

Leslie

I've had several email attachments that I can't open.I get the message:

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this
action. Create an association in the Set Association control panel.'

Can anyone please give me step-by-step instructions on how to do this?

Thanx

Hi Leslie,

What is the file extension? You will need to have a program installed
that can open and use the file extension. If you do have one installed,
then Method Two in this tutorial will show you how to associate the
program as the "Current default" for the file extension.

It would be helpful if you tell us what type of attachment it is,
..doc, .xls, .pps, etc. Also, are you able to save the attachment,
then open the saved document outside of Windows ail?

Hi Gary, it's a .pps file and yes, I can open it if I save it. Thank you

Click on the paperclip at the top right corner of the message and look
at the file name for the attachment. If it's winmail.dat, it's in the
Outlook
RTF format, and you'll have to install Outlook or a software package
containing Outlook, such as many of the Microsoft Office software
packages, to be able to read it.

Otherwise, tell us the file extension (the part of the filename starting
with the last period) so we can tell you what program you need to open
such attachments.

I cannot open an attachment which is a dat file. Can anyone tell me how to do
it?

Winmail.dat files are proprietary files created by the Outlook program.
Other email programs are not able to open those files.
Tell the Outlook sender to resend using plain text.

You may have been misled by a poorly worded error message.
What type of attachment was it (DOC, PPS, JPG, etc.).
Are you able to save the attachment and open it outside of Windows Mail?

There seldom is a need to set associations, which is done in the
Default Programs applet.
