Crashing when image save as dialog appears

When I try to save an image in either IE or Paint
(haven't tried others yet, but it seems to be a WinXP
thing) the Save As dialog appears with the Save in:
location of My Pictures pre-selected.

Immediately following the dialog appearance, I get an
error from the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library that
says:

Runtime error!

Program: <path to executable>

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate
it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's
support team for more information.

I'm pretty much unable to do anything with images as a
result of this. I can't correlate the start of this
problem with the installation of anything new...

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
T

What is the program? This error appears with a specific application. When you put
this phrase "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error" into Google you get
55,000 hits.
When you put this phrase into Google "This application has requested the Runtime to
terminate..." You get 646 hits, each one applying to a different program.

As I said in the original post, so far it happens in IE 6 and MS Paint.
