crashing of screen

Advise please,

I sometimes get my mouse cursor splitting into almost 3 segments as opposed
to 2 and then the screen goes flickery very fast and everything becomes a
major blur, reboot works fine with no apparent errors, have tried latest scan
with up to date software, no sign of any virus.
use home xp its a 6400 inspiron from dell under 7 months old. Usually
programs open are outlook and IE v7, I had IE v6 and had same problem so
updated but still same. It may be just that these programs are open when it
occurs by chance ?
Would it be a corrupt registery ? eek please advise

Here's what I would try:

- Look for updated graphics card drivers.

- Open Display Properties, Settings tab, Advanced button, Troubleshoot
tab, and lower the Graphics Hardware Acceleration. If that helps, you
need to try updated graphics card drivers.

- Is this related to how long the laptop is on? The graphics card could
be overheating.. I don't know if it has a fan, but most new graphics
cards do on towers..
