Black Screen Blinking Cursor On Boot up

Hi

My Brothers computer has just stopped working, he has XP Home
installed.

When here turns it on it checks the bios successfully then when it
should continue to the XP boot screen all he gets is a Blank Screen
With a blink cursor.

The Hard Drive doesn't make any noise.

So i tried putting in the XP disk to try and repair, but when the CD
trys to boot that also crashes to the same screen Blank Scrren after it
says on the screen " checking current system configuration......"

is the HD dead or is it a video error please advise

How interesting that I recently had same occurrance. I was playing a
srabble game i downloaded and then figured I should re-boot for memory
and left room. When I came back, the monitor had black screen and
cursor at top left just blinking. Tried several times and just would
not boot up. Motherboard keys were also not operational. If i hit cap
lock or num lock, the lights did not come on.

Finally found out it was a dead motherboard. If you take the memory
sticks out and then try to boot up you should hear audible beeps. If
you do not hear beeps, then mb is dead. Got new mb, processor, etc.,
and hard drive was fine.

Might be your problem too. dunno.
