Crashes

I have two computers with Windows Defender installed on both. On the one
computer it runs fine, but on this one it crashes my system hard after about
5 minutes of running while doing a "full scan". It just started doing this in
about the last month or so. I am currently using Version: 1.1.1347.0,
Definition Version: 1.14.1922.8. Any ideas?

Hello MightyMike,

First remove all temporarily junk

Open a Internet window and go to Internet Options, Delete Cookies and Temp
Files and included all offline content, then also go to Start menu and Run
and type (with %)
%temp%
and clear that fºlder. Also go to Start menu and Run and tipe (without %)
temp
and clear that folder.

Run the Disk Cleanup tººl
To start the Disk Cleanup tool, click Start menu, click Run, type
cleanmgr.exe
in the Open box, and then click OK.
OR
Open Disk Cleanup via Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tººls.

Enable Hidden Files and folder's.

To enable hidden files and folders Go to taskbar, click Start > My Computer.

On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.

On the View tab, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.

Make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' is enabled.

known file types ' is not checked then press ªpply.

You can set this back later by opening the same page and pressing 'restore

Empty your IE cache and your other temporary file folders, eg: c:\temp,
c:\windows\temp or C:\Documents and Settings\<name>\Local Settings\Temp (the
path to your temp folder will change depending on your name) - sometimes
programmes can be hidden in there - watch out for mysterious *.exe files or
*.dll files in those fºlders;
and c:\Documents and Settings\username\local settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5 and delete all the files in those directories and
subdirectºries).

This is bad. Don't do that. Do I take it that it doesn't crash on a
quickscan? Have you run a chkdsk on the drive?

Yes, you are correct. It seems to run fine doing a "quick scan". I just ran
another "full scan" and the system crashed again after reading about 45,000
files. No I don't have a thermal problem. I have an alert for that.

Have you looked at the event log? anything recorded around the crashes?

I have seen at least one previous posted issue like this--as I recall it,
the content of a particular file apparently caused this behavior--i.e. there
was no file system problem (chkdsk), and removal of the offending file --or
maybe just moving or re-writing the file--stopped the crash.

What I can't recall is how that poster spotted what file was involved. This
is something that I sure would like to get a replication on--if it really is
file content, this is a nasty bug--but the last poster didn't convince
me--or maybe it is file content combined with some other variable......(i.e.
I'd sure like to get a copy of a file which has this effect on a Defender
scan--but as I recall, I did that with the last user who reported this, and
it didn't do it on my system.)

Thanks all for responding. I don't know. Apparently this thing is a Random
problem. I have run it three times now in the last two days and it hasn't
crashed in Full Scan. I looked at the logs, but didn't see anything unusal
except it showing the re-booting process. But I really don't know what to
look for. It has downloaded and installed a few updates since the last crash,
so maybe somehow this had corrected the problem. Guess I'll just wait and see
what happens!
Thanks all!

Thanks--if the system has time to record it, there can be crash information
in a log record--I don't recall what they look like, but it would be right
next to the startup entries in the system log. However--sounds like in your
case it isn't there.

This is definitely something you'd want not to happen, so if you spot
anything you can see that seems to correlate, post it.

Thanks for posting the issue--this helps--even if it's just to give some
stats about how often this is happening.

Hi Mike,

Windows Defender should build an error report for transmission to MSFT on
all crashes, please check your application log for crashes reported in
msmpeng.exe. My SWAG is that you have a file that triggers our hang
reporting - if our engine hangs scanning a file, we will intentionally crash
so we can get a full report of what was happening in the hang. If this is
indeed what's happening to you, the error report should allow us to fix the
bug, and allow you to add an exclusion for the problem file.

Please double-check your application log for crash events, if you post the
details of the event I can investigate further.

Regards,
Joe
