crashed hard drive recover

Hi Folks:
A popular topic: I have 2 identical hard drives. Maxtor 80gb.
One suddenly doesn't even spin. I swapped controller cards, and now
the drive spins, but the heads sound like they are snapping back and
fourth, for maybe 30 seconds after boot-up. The bios doesn't seem to
be able to see the drives parameters. I guess the first track is erased
of all sectoring and hard format. Is there a way to get the rest of the
data back via some software? It's not critical, but I'd like to get the
old pictures.
Till then I've swapped the controller back to the good drive, which
still works.
Running WinXP
IDE DMA/133

if its not seen in the bios, then you cannot recover within win

FWIW......I had BAD luck with iolo Search and Recover 3.
