new extra HDD drive boots in pio mode

N

ntl

I installed a new 160 gB samsung drive in addition to the original maxtor
one of 80 gb

windows xp home with all updates

asus a7a 266e mother board , athelon 1900+

I have tried the following

I have revised the bios version from 1010 to 1012

Set Maxtor original drive to dma 5 , same as Samsung

Tried another dma 6 drive, a Hitachi 250 GB,

Formatted disc with 80 GB partition & leftover

Manually setting bios to dma 5 for both discs

Drive jumpers set directly, not cable sensed.

Tried new cable
updated ali drivers.
tried from safe mode
deleted controler and drives from device manager (& re boot)

What is really interesting is that if I install windows on the new drive and
use my old as slave they both show as dma 5, but I do not wish to install
all the programs on the new disc, indeed some are location specific and
would entail repeat downloads etc.

Needless to say when swapped back to normal the new drive is back to pio

any ideas would be greattfully tried.

Remove the jumper completely (no jumper at all) from the Samsung drive and
see what happens.
If that doesn't work then try experimenting with different jumper
configurations. Sometimes two drives made by different manufactures don't
follow the Master/Slave rules.
