Hi
I am using windows XP home edition in my laptop.
In the windows task manager I see the CPU usage 100% continuously. I am
worried about this because I dont have any high memory consuming application
running in my system
Please let me know how to solve this problem.
Thanks in advance.

Hi, avijit:
Start>Run... type "taskmgr"> "processes" tab> in the "CPU" column check
which process has high CPU usage. Highlight it and click "End Process". That
should lower CPU usage.

Open the Windows Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) and go to the
Processes tab.

Click twice on the "CPU" column header to sort the list into
descending order by CPU usage.

That will show you which processes are using the most CPU time. Post
the list of the 4 or 5 most active processes back here if you need
assistance in identifying them further.

p.s. - My own computer shows 100% CPU usage all of the time. That is
because I run a distributed computing program called "Folding at Home"
which is a research project into Protein structure. The same thing
will happen if you have any similar software installed such as SETI.

Good luck

Hi
some of the applications which have high CPU time are
1.IEXPLORER.EXE(It consumes most of the CPU resources. Is it normal?? )
2.explorer.exe (please tell me the difference between this two.)
3.msmsgs.exe
I have also noticed that this cpu consumption increases drastically after I
connect to the internet.
My internet explorer is not performing well. Let me be specific. My IE is
slow, it refreshes itself continuously(I can hear the tickling sound all the
time I use IE) and most of all it is not really effective blocking the banner
etc.
Thanks in advance.

1. IEXPLORE.exe is Internet Explorer. You may have more than one of these.
The activity of IEXPLORE.exe is directly related to the site to which it is
connected.
2. explorer.exe is Windows Explorer. Its activity should vary over time.
3. msmsgs.exe is for MSN Messenger Internet chat.
4.Naturally, connecting to the Internet with Internet Explorer would
increase CPU activity if you are sending or receiving data.
5. Internet Explorer does not block popups. You need a 3rd party program and
there are good free ones. http://www.panicware.com/product_psfree.html
6. You need to scan for spyware.

If you have typed this correctly, you have the Rapid Blaster virus.

1. iexplorer.exe - virus
2. iexplore.exe - MS Internet Explorer
3. explorer.exe - Windows Graphical User Interface
4. msmsgs.exe - Windows Messenger

You should scan in Safe Mode with a current version (not earlier than
2004) antivirus using updated definitions. If you do not have one
installed (oh, why not?) then start scanning with TrendMicro's
Sysclean, as follows:

TrendMicro's Sysclean is an extensive antivirus tool which has the
advantage of not needing to be installed. It requires two parts - the
scanning engine and the virus pattern files. Delete all Temporary and
Temporary Internet Files before running the program.

1. Create a new folder on your Desktop or the C: drive named something
useful like "Sysclean".
2. Go here and download the two parts of the program to that folder:

http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp - Sysclean
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp - virus pattern files

The pattern files will be zipped - extract them with your unzipper (like
WinZip) or if you have XP, you can just open the folder. You need to
put the extracted files in the Sysclean folder you made.

3. Restart your computer in Safe Mode. Get into Safe Mode by repeatedly
tapping the F8 key as the computer is starting up to get to the proper
menu.
4. Go to the Sysclean folder you made and double-click on sysclean.com.
Start the scan. After the scan is finished, look at the log. You may
need to make a note of where any viruses were found if they were not
able to be removed so you can manually delete them.

Then get a full-featured antivirus, install it, update it, and do a
thorough scan in Safe Mode. It would also be smart to scan for
non-viral malware with free programs like Ad-aware and Spybot Search &
Destroy. Make sure you update those programs before running and do your
scans in Safe Mode.

Yes, sometimes XP is just like your liver, doing lots of amazing things
behind the scenes. You only become aware of its many functions when one of
them goes bad.
