CPU usage

My system resources are being used up (up to 98% or 99%)
by a process called SYSTEM which has a PID = 4. I know
this is not normal and the SYSTEM IDLE PROCESS, which has
a PID = 0, would usually be in this position. This is
making the system very slow and sluggish to use. I'm
running MS Windows XP Home Edition version 2002 Service
Pack 1. How can I correct this situation ?

Run your anti-virus program and then download,update, and
check for problems with Spybot...
