CPU usage with iexplorer.exe

Hi all,

I have an AMD Sempron 3500+ with 1512 RAM. The CPU usage is really
concerning me. Every 10 seconds, it goes up to 100% and then a few seconds
later it drops back to around 20%. It is nearly always iexplorer.exe which is
using the most processing power, but I am not even using the internet for
highly demanding tasks.

I think it started when I installed some software for my printer that was
not compatible for Vista. I have uninstalled it, however, the problem
remains. Has anyone got any ideas? I have tried System Restore at different
points but it keeps saying it failed to restore.

Every time I open a new program, the CPU goes to 100% for a short time. This
PC came with Vista pre-installed, does anyone know whether there is any way
to format and then install it again as I do not have the CD.

I'd be grateful for any help.

RAM usage is not dependent on what programs you initiate, there are also
internal activities such as the cache, prefetch, anti-virus, etc that could
be using the CPU
It is normal for the CPU to reach high % when you first load a program or
activity and will drop down once the cache and prefetch have did there job.
With the info you have provided you have no problem & most probably doing
more damage trying to fix a problem about the CPU usage.
The fact that you can not restore is another matter.
What program did you uninstall?
If you uninstalled Norton AV follow directions at link:

i'm suffering from the same problem like Vitastic, and i haven't installed
any rare softwares. i have a second disc booting with XP and the problem
doesn't appear. the CPU runs normally.

when i open the task manger there are too many windows applications that
consumes anormally a big quantity of the CPU.

Thanks Bob J, really appreciated. I have an MP760 Canon Printer and
downloaded the programs from the CD, however, it said that it is not
compatible. I have since uninstalled and installed the Vista compatible
versions, however, it still doesn't let me restore.

And regarding the CPU usage, even when I scroll on a website, the CPU jumps
to around 60%. Is this normal?

Thanks once again

The RAM memory usage you mentioned is normal, whenever you load a program,
webpage, etc. information is loaded into RAM so that the information can be
accessed by the user, quicker.(That's it purpose)
I have 3gb ram on this PC & and ram usage sits on 20-30% with just the
desktop showing.
Some expert say that empty ram is wasted ram!!!!
If you wish to find out more about RAM & CPU usage go to MS support and
enter "ram/cpu" in search, then follow the links. (Some of the infro can get
quite technical)
In conclusion it is unlikely, with the info you have provided that you have
an problem with ram usage.
