CPU usage at 100% very slow launch of applications.

Just did a clean install of Vista Home Premium. HP a405n processor. 2.7g speed.
1 gig memory. McAfee anti virus. Network Magic.
often the cpu usage is at a 100% and when launching my e-mail app. it will
sometimes launch in 2 seconds. Other times it may take from 10 20 seconds.
Cannot determine what is dragging down the cpu.
Any thoughts??.
Larry.

Start by uninstalling McAfee, which is junk and causes numerous
problems. Since you have Network Magic (the second thing to uninstall if
uninstalling McAfee doesn't work), I assume you are behind a router so
not immediately installing an antivirus will not be an issue.

If uninstalling McAfee solves the problem, replace it with a better
antivirus such as NOD32, Kaspersky, or even Avast if you want a free
program. The built-in Windows Firewall is adequate for most people.

If uninstalling McAfee doesn't solve the problem, uninstall Network
Magic (unnnecessary in any case).

Thank You. I did start up Defender. Uninstalled McAfee and did make a big
difference.

Good. I'm not sure what Defender has to do with this, though. Defender
is not an antivirus and you need one.

I pretty much had the same problem as you.
My solution was to download Perfect Disk 8.0. After the dfrag, PD 8.0 has a
feature that defrags the system metadata and pagefile.sys. This does it's
work at reboot, and it fixed the problem for me.
