100% CPU taken away

My computer has been running unreasonalbly slow for the last few weeks. I
checked in Task Manager and it says CPU Usage at 100% and system memory at
around 70%. What's taking up the RAM is Firefox and two copies of
svchost.exe. I ran AdAware to check for any malware and all it found was
cookies.

I am running Vista Home Premium.

I am thinking about buying a new hard drive and just starting over.

First, tell us a bit about your system . . .

How much RAM do you have? How fast is your CPU?

Also, run the Reliability and Performance monitor to see what's sucking up
all the CPU time.

This will give you detailed information on everything that's using resources
on your system and perhaps you can track down the offending software. (By
the way, Firefox has become a serious resource hog, so I'm not surprised
that you're seeing a large memory footprint when it's running.)

As to seeing two copies of svchost.exe, this is normal. "Service Host" is
just that, a host program for system services, and depending on the system,
there can be multiple copies of this running. On my system I have 11 copies
running at the moment.

As to buying a new hard drive to start over . . . why buy a new hard drive?
Simply backup everything you need and format the drive you have . . . but
I'd suggest actually trying to troubleshoot the problem(s) before resorting
to the "chainsaw method" of fixing anything though.

I have a gig of RAM and 3.2 Ghz Pentium 4 processor. As for the hard drive,
I've screwed things up. My primary drive is the F drive and my back up drive
is the C drive. My F drive is almost full.
I will some research. Does Ready Boost help at all?

What size are your HDD? Are the HD drives actual HD or 1 HD divided into
partitions?
As previously advised backup your personal data from HDD even if onto DVDs
then remove what applications you no longer use, reclaim areas of the HDD.
An investment in more RAM to at least 2gb would be a better option than
relying on Readyboost, having said that Readyboost may help.
If you have a stack of photos/music stored on HDD, transfer to DVDs.
Personally I only keep the most recent personal data stored on the HDD ie:
6/12 mth old.

Upgrading your RAM to 2GB would help. After that, turn off the disk cache.
Ready boost helps, I am using a 2GB flashdrive from Sandisk and it is working
fine.

My C: (non Windows drive) has 80 Gigs left on it and the F: drive (Vista)
has about 30 Gigs. I bought 2 Gig of RAM and that seems to be helping a lot.

I want to buy 750 GB drive after the first service pack cames out and start
over again.
