cpu usage remains at 100@

Help!!!
when i view my task manager i notice that i have at times
over 40 process running and cpu usgae is constantly at
100%. this is now causing major delays or preventing the
opening of various products on my desktop(ie norton
antivirus, word, etc.) can anyone offer and suggestions
on which files must remain selected in the start up
folder of msconfig. i have tried several different
combonations and nothing seems to work. any suggestions
would be greatly appreciated
