CPU usage 100%

Today my 2month old Toshiba Tecra M1 laptop is playing up.
Firstly the internal modem won't dial out, error 633 keeps coming up as soon as
trying to dial any connection. Also when working in MS Office (excell or word) I
am frequently locking up with 100% CPU usage, when looking at the process that
is causing most of the problems it seems more often than not to be
"agentsvr.exe" and also on one occassion it was "winword.exe". These problems
all started today I think.

I have done a full scan using Symantec AV with latest defs and also scanned
using Ad-Aware with latest updates but nothing found.

I am running XP SP1 with all latest updates.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks
Steve

Tried that earlier today but other than finding some minor things it had no
effect on fixing the problem.

You don't mention what version of Adaware since Adaware 6 is obsolete, please perform the
following instructions....

1) Download the following four items...

McAfee Stinger
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

Trend Sysclean Package
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp

Latest Trend Pattern File.
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp

Adaware SE (free personal version v1.05)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Create a directory.
On drive "C:\"
(e.g., "c:\New Folder")
or the desktop
(e.g., "C:\Documents and Settings\lipman\Desktop\New Folder")

Download Sysclean.com and place it in that directory.
Dowload the Trend Pattern File by obtaining the ZIP file.
For example; lpt244.zip

Extract the contents of the ZIP file and place the contents in the same directory as
sysclean.com.

2) Update Adaware with the latest definitions.
3) If you are using WinME or WinXP, disable System Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm
4) Reboot your PC into Safe Mode
5) Using Trend Sysclean, Stinger and Adaware, perform a Full Scan of your
platform and clean/delete any infectors/parasites found.
(a few cycles may be needed)
6) Restart your PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of your platform using the three
utilities; Trend Sysclean, Stinger and Adaware
7) If you are using WinME or WinXP, Re-enable System Restore and re-apply any
System Restore preferences, (e.g. HD space to use suggested 400 ~ 600MB),
8) Reboot your PC.
9) If you are using WinME or WinXP, create a new Restore point

Ad Aware Version is Adaware SE as listed below with latest updates!

Have found one thing that triggers off the 100% CPU Usage though and that is the
animated assistant in Office 2000. This starts the agentsvr.exe process and it
runs OK most of the time but when it locks up and goes to 100%CPU the assistant
cant be got rid of and the only way to shut down the machine is with the off
key!!! Can't even end the process!!!! Not sure if this problem is at all related
to my error 633 for my modem which seemed to start at the same time or just a
coincidence?

I will try what you have listed tomorrow and report back

Thanks
Steve
