When I returned to my computer after a couple of hours on standby, it had
crashed. A restart showed "Warning! CPU has been changed..." I have a Zone
Alarm firewall and Norton Antivirus running. System restore doesn't change
the "Warning! CPU has been changed" notification. What has happened, and
what do I do?

You have a hardware fault (this message will no doubt be from your
computer's BIOS, and *not* from Windows).

Take it to a computer repair shop............its not an XP problem its a
hardware problem and you dont seem the type to take it apart
