CPU at 100% most of the time

Sometime in the past couple of months I began noticing my CPU fan coming on
and kicking into high gear. It was while I was running intense applications
so I gave it little notice. A couple weeks ago I passed by the machine and
noticed the CPU in high gear. I knew no one had been near the PC in several
hours so I turned on the monitor to find out what was running. Perhaps my
wife left something going??? Nothing. I checked the APPLICATIONS in the
Task Manager. Nothing was showing as running. I checked the Performance
tab and noticed the CPU at 100%. I watched this for quite some time and it
was very little change. Even now with just Outlook Express open the CPU fan
is in high gear and the PERFORMANCE tab indicates almost 100% most of the
time. I have a Compaq with a 1600mhz processor. I just recently upgraded
to SP2. I've noticed that the 3 1/2" drive is constantly being checked
about every 7 seconds. MSIEXEC.exe is constantly occupying the PROCESSES to
the point that System Idle is never regestering any use. I plan to rebuild
my system if nothing can be found. I've tryed many spyware search engines,
even the new Microsoft AntiSpyware beta package to no avail. Any help is
appreciated. Please help!!!!!! before my CPU fan burns out or the CPU burns
up.

Apparently the Microsoft Installer program can be set to maintain some
logs concerning its activites and the results. There might be some clues
as to what it is attempting in the log files. More information is
available on Microsoft's web site:

Since you are able to get into the Performance Monitor, what program is
occupying the processor time? Try killing that process.

By the way, your CPU is designed to operate at 100% all the time. If it, or
the fan burns out, you have another problem.
