Could not modify the properties for local area network connection.

Hi all:

I am using windows 2000 server with sp4. When I try to
modify the properties for local network connection, I got
the following errors.

1. If I select the Internet Protocol(Tcp/Ip), the
properties button is grayed out.

2. If I try to uninstall the Internet Protocol component,
the error is poped up, which is "Could not uninstall the
Internet Protocol(Tcp/Ip) component. The error is
0x800F0201.

3. If I try to install another components, the error
is "Could not add the requested component. The error is:
The INF or device information set or elements does not
match the specified install class."

I appreciate you for any reply.

Johnson.

I have never seen that but here is a KB link that describes the error in sentence 3
that may be worth a look at. You could also try to uninstall the network adapter in
Device Manager [ maybe while in safe mode with networking ] and reboot but I suspect
that may be a problem also. Be sure to look in Event Viewer for any errors in system
or application log that may be helpful. --- Steve

Hi Johnson.

I don't really know what the issue is. I did a search of Google web and
newsgroups for your error messages and though more than a few people had a
similar problem, none was able to say they were able to fix the problem. I
don't know if it would help to try a different brand nic or not. Most
suggestions I saw were to reinstall tcp/ip which you indicate is not
possible. I don't know if it will help but the KB article below shows how to
manually remove tcp/ip on a domain controller. If you want to try the same
you probably could use safe mode since there is no Directory Servcies
Restore Mode on a non domain controller I believe. That's about all I
ot. --- Steve

Thanks Steven.

I tried again and failed. The following was what I did.

I took out all the NICs and did the actions based on what that article
mentioned, restarted the machine and then shut down. Again put one NIC back,
open machine, the system detected the new device and tried to install driver,
I got the same error like "Could not add the requested component. The error
is: The INF or device information set or elements does not match the
specified install class."

any idea for this issue?

Thank you.

Have the same problem and to make it worse now networking doesn't work even
with ethernet cable and my orgional adaptor. If this is a W2K issue some one
who has support needs to turn it in. I have an OEM copy of w2k and they will
just send me to the manufacturer. If anyone finds out exactly what the
problem is and how to fix it PLEASE let me know at (e-mail address removed)
Thanks Eric
