Corruption of registry performance counter library values?

Wow, what a title eh?

Hi everyone, I am well out of my depth here and I am hoping someone out
there can help me. In the UK Sky TV have launched a service called
'skybybroadband' which allows you to download movies to your PC to be played
at anytime over a 30 day period, then they self delete. It has lots of copy
protection safeguards etc to stop you burning the movies to DVD and uses a
special pier to pier system to take advantage of all users PC's to give
quicker download times etc.

Anyway, as a Sky subscriber I am entitled to join this service for free and
I thought it would be a good idea, so I downloaded the programme and
installed it. The only problem is that when I run it I get this error message
that tells me to call Sky customer support. When I called them they said that
the problem was not with their software but rather one of the following two
problems:

1. The Windows XP registry performance counter library values are corrupt, or
2. Another application has manually disabled the performance counter library.

And they suggested I seek help from Microsoft.

So I did a search on Microsoft.com and google but I could not understand the
replies. I am a decent PC user, but am way out of my depth here. I would
stand more chance helping Geordi or Scotty realign the plasma convertors ;-)

Does anyone understand any of this? Any suggestions?

Thanks All,

Even though they allow you to play them, you still might need a video encoder
and its software to play.Such as "power DVD" or similiar,w/o the software,
videos wont play,if you run an ati graphics card, they offer a free one.

Thanks Andrew.

I have Power DVD, WMP, Real player etc etc, I don't think that is the
problem. The program that you have to open to browse the library and download
with wont even open because of the error message, so I don't even have a move
to play yet.
